Karl Because you would not be building a free host from scratch. You already have one running, you just call it a sandbox.
Someone spins one up today and has a real Flarum in about a minute. The distance between that and a free tier is a button that says keep it, plus a longer expiry on the boxes people actually use. No new stack, no new ops story, and it stays inside the promise you are comfortable making: best effort, export available at any time, nothing implied beyond that.
On why anyone would pick you over FreeFlarum, I am not guessing at this one. I was a customer.
- Support that actually knows Flarum. Every question I asked got a real answer, quickly, from someone who wanted my community to work. Never a copy-paste reply. That is not a feature you can put on a pricing page and it is not something a free host can staff, but it is the entire reason I would not have gone anywhere else.
- Extensions. You write and maintain a dozen or more of your own and they already run on 2.x. On a free host the available list is whatever the host has vetted, and that is precisely where small forums get stuck. Wiki, support tickets and a shoutbox on a free forum is not an offer that exists elsewhere.
- The tooling means free can actually work. The MCP and the troubleshooting tools let people diagnose their own forum, so most problems never land on you. That is what makes a free tier survivable for one person.
- There is a next step. A free forum that can later turn on backups, monitoring, a custom domain and priority support without moving hosts. As far as I can tell FreeFlarum has no paid step to take, so the day you outgrow it you migrate somewhere else and start again.
That last point is the business case rather than the charity case. The free tier is not the product, it is how someone ends up owning a forum that the paid add-ons attach to. Nobody buys backups for a forum they do not have yet.
And to be straight with you about why I keep pushing on this: I have not replaced what I had with you. I have been making do since, which is a fairly loud answer to whether there was a reason to bother. The version I am describing here asks far less of you than what I was paying for, and it would still be better than the alternative for the people asking.
Start it capped. A fixed number of free forums, best effort, export always one click away. If nobody keeps theirs past the first month you have learned that cheaply, and if they do you will have the beginnings of a customer base rather than an audience.
